Our resident potter has put together a useful pyrometric cone kit to help you test fire your kiln.
The kit includes a Large 3 Hole Plaque and a set of 5, 6, and 7-cone Pyrometric Cones.
If you are firing to Cone 5, the #5 pyrometric cone should be slightly curled at the top and the #6 and #7 pyrometric cones should be standing straight up.
If you are firing to Cone 6, the #5 prometric cone will be bent down all the way, the #6 cone will be slightly curled at the top, and the #7 pyrometric cone should be standing straight up.
If you are firing to Cone 7, both the #5 and #6 cones will be completely bent down, and the #7 cone will be slightly curled at the top.
Take the guesswork out of making cone packs. Orton Large 3 Hole Plaques are used for Large cones 019 to 36. With these the angle is always correct which is critically imperative to ensure an accurate reading of the cone temperature achieved by your witness cones.
Large Pyrometric Cones allow users a practical method to monitor the heatwork (the effect of temperature and time at temperature) inside their kiln. Today they are used by quality conscious manufacturers who want a visual indication of the heatwork in locations throughout their kiln.
